How can we begin to fix something if we don’t take the time to truly understand it? So many teams, organizations and people around the world are having “the conversation” but are we really getting any better?

Whether it is Unconscious Bias training similar to the hours of investment made by Starbucks or Sephora in recent months; or Diversity and Inclusion initiatives that have become something of a fad on every fortune 1000 website – do we even know what we are talking about?

What is Bias anyway? One definition is: prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. Let’s take this one step further and look at the definition of prejudice: a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Are we making decisions based on unconscious, preconceived opinions that are not based on facts? Yes, and we have all done this hundreds of times in our lives. Can we begin to change that behavior? Of course we can! So how do we define these things such as Inclusion, Diversity, Judgement, etc.?

Our workshop is designed to help us build our knowledge about what we are trying to break down. We must understand what we are trying to change. We must be able to articulate what it looks like to be better…what does it actually mean to be more inclusive? Is your Diversity initiative inclusive or exclusive? If we define what we are trying to change, we can go to work and break the bias for good!
